chan chan

A few miles outside of Trujillo is Chan-Chan, the capital of the ancient Chimu kingdom and the biggest pre-Columbian city in South America.  It was built between 1000 and 1400 and it is said that about 30,000 people once lived here.  The city is made of intricately carved adobe brick with walls up to 30 feet high.  The Chimu kingdom was the chief state in Peru before they were overtaken by the Incas between 1465 and 1470.
