The church and monastery of San Francisco in Lima is one of the oldest churches in South America. It is also the first official Catholic cemetery in Lima, at a time when the dead were laid to rest in catacombs beneath the church. There have been more than 35,000 people placed in the catacombs, their bones arranged symmetrically throughout the tunnels and caverns below the ground. The girls were a little creeped out by the sight of it all, but it was still a fascinating thing to see. Outside we did a little pigeon chasing. We fed them and watched them fly overhead. An altogether disgusting experience.
